Back-to-school AI laptop checklist: what students actually need
An AI label does not establish that a laptop fits a course, lasts through a school day, or runs required software. Start with the academic workload and ownership basics; treat the NPU as useful only when a required feature can use it.

Confirm the required operating system, processor architecture, applications, browser or testing software, virtualization needs, ports, webcam expectations, and whether the school supports repairs or loaners for the model being considered.
Specialized programs can change the answer. Engineering, architecture, game development, statistics, media production, and some security courses may require software or graphics capabilities that an ordinary office laptop does not provide. Other students may spend most of their time in a browser, documents, video calls, and library systems. Those are category requirements published by Microsoft, not SavvySnipper's claim that every student needs those numbers.
Ask which feature will use the NPU, whether it runs locally or in the cloud, which languages and applications support it, and how it affects battery, privacy, and accessibility. 4. Make a current-generation buy, wait, or pass decision
Buy when the exact current configuration meets documented course requirements, has enough capacity for the expected ownership period, fits the student's daily carry and battery needs, and is supported by an acceptable seller, warranty, and return policy. Verify the current price and availability at the destination; this checklist does not provide a live offer.
Wait when the school has not issued requirements, the major software list is unresolved, or the current listing lacks enough detail to identify the variant. Waiting can also make sense when the student's existing device is adequate for the first weeks and hands-on testing would improve the size, keyboard, or display decision.
Pass when the AI branding is doing more work than the specifications. A strong NPU does not compensate for incompatible course software, insufficient storage, a poor keyboard, difficult repairs, or excessive carry weight.
